Archbishop-Metropolitan honored as Patriarch of the CANC
The College of Bishops has voted to change the name of the office of “Archbishop-Metropolitan” to “Patriarch”, to better delineate the leadership of the Church globally, in a clear and unambiguous manner. This change also helps us to prepare for future growth, by being part of the Church effort to restructure and reorganized the Church. The Patriarchate will continue to develop during the restructuring, to better serve the needs of the Church globally.

Archbishop Queen meets with Vatican officials
Archbishop Queen traveled to Rome late November, and met with Vatican officials. The topics centered mainly around what the two churches have in common, and establishing more formal lines of communications. The talks were very insightful and provided to each an opportunity to better understand the other, and the operations of each around the world. Good ideas were discussed to continue to improve relations and work towards a new level of communication and cooperation. Upon his return to the United States, Archbishop Queen briefed the College of Bishops and the Vicars-General regarding the specific substance of the meetings, and this information will be used to guide the Church in continuing to “strengthen the ties that bind”.
Two New Deacons ordained in Zambia
Archbishops Andre Queen and Luciano Mbewe celebrated Mass together in Lusaka, Zambia and during Mass ordained two men to the Diaconate, and appointed one new acolyte on Sunday, November 22, 2009. Despite a previous night’s heavy rains, and an early morning follow-up rainfall, the faithful drove, rode busses and walked to Mass to witness this joyous event. Local television and newspaper reporters also were in attendance to see history made. Also in attendance were pastors and lay faithful of other Christian Churches who stand in solidarity with the CANCZ.
Growing Brick-by-brick
The Eastern Province of Zambia has the great distinction of being the home of the first parish church building of the CANCZ. The parish church building was build completely by the parishioners themselves, with their own hands. During Archbishop Queen’s visit to Zambia, he visited the parish, and commented that, during the celebratory Mass there on November 20th, that another constriction project may be on the horizon, as so many people came to the Mass from near and far, that Mass had to be held outside of the church! In addition to the faithful of the parish, new converts who had been studying the faith were also present, and Archbishop Mbewe and Archbishop Queen baptized around fifty new converts to the faith. Although the first parish church, a total of four parish church buildings are in various stages of being built in Zambia, with more in the planning stages.
Growth in members and dedication is present also, as evident by the establishment of the Sisters of the Holy Peace. Already having a Mother House in Lusaka, this order of sisters already is serving the church in Zambia as it continues to grow.
During Archbishop Queen’s visit to the Church in Zambia, both he and Archbishop Mbewe found themselves answering questions, and clearing away misconceptions and misinformation about the Catholic Apostolic National Church, in print media, and through on-air television interviews. Many Zambian people heard and read what the Catholic Apostolic National Church is, and what we believe.
The Society of Christ the King announces A Religious Order of Knights and Ladies for the Third Order
The Superior General of the Society of Christ the King, announced on November 22, 2009 in Lusaka, Zambia, the creation and establishment of the “Knights of Christ the King”. This is an extension of the Third Order for Men and Women who are looking for a way to increase their service to God in the faith in their everyday life. The program is for regular lay men and women who want to give of their time and efforts to serve the Church through service to others. The Knights and Ladies will provide a Catholic social organization for members of the Church looking to spend time with ordinary men and women of the same faith, while also volunteering their time to help support church initiatives, charities and good causes. Knights and Ladies are expected to be examples of proper Catholic living in secular life, demonstrating a life lived in the faith. If you are interested, contact the Society of Christ the King via email.

Gubala, SCR, meets with Archbishop-Metropolitan Sherman Mosley, Primate of the Old Catholic Church of America (OCCA), to discuss a re-affirmation of communion. The Navy has a new Lieutenant!
On Saturday, November 14, 2009, Rev. Fr. Ericjon Thomas took his oath of office and was sworn in as a commissioned officer of the United States Navy. At the Navy Operational Support Center, in Erie, Pennsylvania, Commander Gerald Hamblin (Navy Chaplain) administered the oath, during the commissioning ceremony. Surrounded by family, including his grandfather, a WWII Navy Veteran himself, friends and fellow educators from the High School where he has taught, LT(jg) Ericjon Thomas (Chaplain Corps) accepted God’s call to bring pastoral counseling and spiritual guidance to the many men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces, where he is sent. He will later report to his first duty station, and begin his Officer Indoctrination and then later, on to Chaplain’s School. Once completed, he then will be assigned to an active duty location, which could be anywhere U.S. troops are stationed. Rev. Fr. Thomas represents the selfless nature of our Christian faith, and serves as an example of one going where God calls, wherever that may be.
A Greater Move towards Unity
This November 15th through to November 23rd 2009, Archbishop Andre Queen will travel to Rome, Italy to meet with Vatican officials and follow up on our previous communications regarding normalized relations and establishing more formal lines of communication. This visit follows that of last year of the Very Rev. Fr. Jerome Kwasek, Vicar General of the CANC, to Rome, where he met with Vatican officials to begin the formalization of dialogue between the two Churches, and the follow up communications afterwards. We are prayerfully hopeful of the outcome of this meeting, and look forward to continuing to foster good relationships with our Roman Catholic brethren. Archbishop Queen will then stopover in London, England and brief the Church with an update, and then visit with our province in Zambia.
A Celebration of Family – Worldwide!
During his travels from November 15th through to November 23rd 2009, Archbishop Andre Queen will also travel to Zambia, where he will visit with our province there, the Catholic Apostolic National Church of Zambia (CANCZ). Archbishop Queen will be greeted by Archbishop Luciano Mbewe of the CANCZ, and the two will visit parishes around the country, meet with the clergy there, celebrate Masses in various parts of the country and spend time with the people. Archbishop Queen will also meet with government officials, local media and church leaders from other denominations, fostering new relationships and giving others a clear understanding of who we are and what we believe. Archbishop Queen will also formally install Archbishop Luciano Anzanga Mbewe as the Archbishop of the Province of Zambia at solemn High Mass, and present the church there with the Apostolic Mandate from the Archbishop-Metropolitan. This much anticipated visit has been in the planning stages for many months, and the excitement it has generated has sparked many questions about the CANC and the faith we profess.
The CANC provinces of the United States are reorganized into one province
His Eminence, Archbishop-Metropolitan Robert M. Gubala, SCR announced recently the reorganization of the Province of the United States. Formerly, the United States had been divided into separate provinces, but now the entire jurisdiction of the Church of the United States has been organized into one single province, as the Province of the United States. This was done to promote uniformity, as every other province represents an entire nation, so too should the United States be organized, and in this manner the church would be organized identically regardless of country. The Archbishop-Metropolitan appointed Archbishop Andre J.W. Queen, SCR, Archbishop-Coadjutor, as the Provincial Ordinary for the Province of the United States. This will have no affect on missions outside of the United States, such as in Canada, which remain a part of the U.S. Province.

The Worldwide Family of Catholic Apostolic National Churches mourns the death of the Patriarch, Dom Luis Fernando Castillo-Mendez

Patriarch Dom Luis Fernando Castillo-Mendez (Seated) with
Our Archbishop-Metropolitan, Bishop Marcelo Pires and Archbishop Andre Queen, and visiting Bishop.
Also shown are Bishop Josivaldo Pereira de Oliviera and Bishop Edson Luiz Campos da Silva
On the morning of October 29, 2009, at approximately 9 am, His Beatitude, Dom Luis Fernando Castillo-Mendez, the Patriarch of the Worldwide Family of Catholic Apostolic National Churches passed away, at the age of 87. Patriarch Mendez was the last living bishop, of the original bishops consecrated by former Roman Catholic Bishop Carlos Duarte Costa, who founded the Brazilian Catholic Apostolic Church (ICAB). Patriarch Mendez was personally responsible for the spread of the National Catholic Church movement around the world, and is survived by the Brazilian Church, as well as the National Churches ministering to the lost sheep around the world.
Our own Archbishop Andre Queen, SCR served as Patriarch Mendez’ Apostolic Delegate to the United States from 2005 to 2007, and the Patriarch himself consecrated (sub conditione) our Archbishop-Metropolitan and Archbishop Queen, to ensure a direct transmission of “Duarte-Costa” Apostolic Lines of Succession. His Eminence, Archbishop-Metropolitan Robert M. Gubala, SCR, send condolences on behalf of the entire Church to the Episcopal Council of the Brazilian Catholic Apostolic Church (ICAB), which can be read here.
The Catholic Apostolic National Church received official notification of the Patriarch’s passing from the Episcopal Council of ICAB (translated from Portuguese):
“The church is in mourning, beginning at 9 am today with the death of the Honorable and Reverend Dom Luis Fernando Castillo Mendez, who presided over the four seats, and Council proclaimed its patriarch and became, later, also Worldwide Patriarch serving all of the Catholic Apostolic National Churches who have communion with ICAB.
The Eminent Professor of the Diocese of Brasilia, which was the founder, died at 87 years of age, as of December 3 and leaves an example of tenacity, sacrifice, courage and determination, a deep and irrepressible yearning in all those deprived of their friendship or were directed by him and grazing. A great characteristic of Dom Luis Castillo was undoubtedly his indomitable courage, the strength he brought to the primacy of the church and the incredible ability he displayed, to build and manage knowledge, a born leader, a man geared to high-flying and high altitude.
Without him, the Church where she exisits, would not possess the assets that it holds today, because it has always been possible to notice, besides being a profound idealist, he has put love in everything realizou. He was a creator of dioceses, and in the history of ICAB, was the Bishop who developed carefully the hierarchy to ensure the continuity of certain ideals of the San Carlos of Brazil. Detractors have always shown a taste for pomp and circumstances, but Dom Castillo-Mendez, personally, was a man of simple life and deeds humility.
The Patriarch of the Church in Brazil was the third Bishop consecrated by St. Carlos of Brazil, of receiving, directly, his apostolic succession. Working much of his life with the founder of the Church and did his best at a certain point of time, in fulfilling the mission to consecrate the followers of the Apostolic College left by Jesus in different countries, taking with them the principles of the National Church. Foi in recognition of this that, assembled in council, the diocesan and primates of several countries that joined the faith nationally elected and gave him the title of World Patriarch that he displayed with great care and was able to honorably execute until death.
The Mass will be celebrated BURIAL OF THE 10H THIS SUNDAY AT THE CATHEDRAL OF OUR LADY OF MIRACULOUS MEDAL, OFFICE BRASILIA, a gathering of bishops, clerics, families and faithful from various parts of BRAZIL AND THE WORLD FOR THE LAST GOODBYE TO THE PATRIARCH OF THE CHURCH.”

The Church Selects a New Seal
The Catholic Apostolic National Church has selected a new church seal. This seal will be used universally throughout the church, in every province. The seal will be a visible sign of our unity and also serve to identify official missions, parishes and ministries worldwide, so that, as the faithful travel, they will always know where home is. The seal replaces the individual seals of the provinces and may undergo additional minor modifications, however is already in use in the church. Under the seal is a banner which reads, "One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism" (Ephesians 4:5) in Latin. The red background represents the blood of Christ through whom we are saved and also the blood of the Martyrs through whose testimony we have received the Faith; The Crossed Keys of Peter and the Mitre represent our Apostolicity - our succession from St Peter and our desire for the unity of the Catholic Church.

Archbishop-Metropolitan Gubala speaks as guest homilist at PNCC Parish
His Eminence, Archbishop-Metropolitan Robert M. Gubala, SCR, returned to Rhode Island from the installation of His Eminence, Archbishop-Metropolitan Sherman R. Mosley, to accept the invitation, once again, from Our Saviour Polish National Catholic Church. His Eminence was invited be the guest homilist at Sunday Mass, June 28, 2009, during which was the special blessing of a christening of a newborn child. After Mass, His Eminence stayed and spoke with and blessed many parishioners and visitors, as well as answered many questions about the CANC.
Installation of Archbishop-Metropolitan Sherman Randall Mosley
The celebration began with a beautiful Installation Reception and birthday celebration on June 26, 2009. In attendance was our own Archbishop-Metropolitan Robert M. Gubala, SCR and Archbishop-Coadjutor Andre J.W. Queen, SCR. During the celebration, there was much prayer and hymns. There were reflections on the profound and lasting impression left by the late Archbishop-Metropolitan James E. Bostwick, and great love and joy expressed for the new Archbishop-Metropolitan of the OCCA. Musical selections were sung by Seminarian Treymayne Johnson, and by the Hispanic Music Ministry of the Cathedral of Holy Angels, while the Cathedral organist, Ms. Kathy O’Conner, provided music to set and balance the mood. After a wonderful dinner, our own Archbishop Andre Queen, SCR, gave the keynote speech, entitled, “Set the Church in Order”, which was well received. Archbishop-Metropolitan Robert Gubala closed the evening with a Benediction and Blessing upon all.
Archbishop-Metropolitan Sherman R. Mosley was solemnly installed and seated in his Episcopal throne at solemn Pontifical Mass on June 27, 2009 by our own Archbishop-Metropolitan Robert M. Gubala, SCR. This installation, approved by special dispensation of the Old Catholic Church of America’s Synod of Bishops, reflects the deep and abiding respect that each jurisdiction has for the other. The Mass was preceded by the Archbishop-Metropolitan’s arrival at the Cathedral Church of the Holy Angels, in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. Prior to his entry was a procession clergy from around the world, who had come to be witness to this historic event. Then followed a procession of flags, representing the many countries in which the OCCA has a presence, this was followed by the banner of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the banner of St. Rita Cascia and the Bostwick Coat of Arms, which the Bostwick Family lovingly approved Archbishop Mosley to assume as his own, in memory of the late Archbishop-Metropolitan James E. Bostwick. Afterwards, a knock at the cathedral door, which was answered by Rev. Fr. Alvaro Ochoa, Rector of the Cathedral, who welcomed the Archbishop to his new see. Following protocol, the new Archbishop-Metropolitan took the oath to protect and guide the church strictly in the Catholic faith, witnessed and sealed.
The celebration was elegant and reflected the many peoples of the OCCA, the many cultures, languages and ministries. Archbishop-Metropolitan Mosley took his oath amid friends, family and well-wishers, and there were several poignant moments where the entire church was visibly moved. Our Archbishop-Metropolitan Robert Gubala invested Archbishop Mosley with the symbols of his new office, each having been solemnly blessed by Archbishop Andre Queen, SCR. After having received the pallium, he was escorted to his new Episcopal throne by Archbishops Gubala and Queen, along with his Chaplain, Rev. Fr. Charles Walders, Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Venson Valencio, and Dean of Clergy & Episcopal Secretariat, Rev. Msgr. Layne Jackson, and solemnly seated.
Following Mass, His Eminence, Archbishop Gubala, was presented a gift by the OCCA, a beautiful portrait, exquisitely framed, entitled “The Good Shepherd”, portraying Christ as a Shepherd reaching our along a cliff to save a lost sheep on a mountain cliff. Archbishop Queen was presented a gift also by the OCCA, of a beautiful wooden and metal relief cross, depicting Father, Son and Holy Spirit at the crucifixion.
A luncheon prepared by the tertiary order of religious who had labored in the background to help everything proceed effortlessly was the perfect event after Mass.
Our congratulations to His Eminence, The Most Reverend Sherman Randall Mosley, D.D., Metropolitan-Archbishop of the Old Roman Catholic Church of America. We look forward to working together, our two traditional Catholic jurisdictions working side-by-side, towards the salvation of souls.

Already in the planning stage is a visit to Zambia in 2009 by members of the Catholic Apostolic National Church (United States), and the Old Catholic Church of Europe, to break bread and pray with the Church in Zambia.
The Church has a new advocate for Ecumenical Outreach
His Eminence, Archbishop-Metropolitan Robert M. Gubala, SCR, has appointed Rev. Fr. Jerome D. Kwasek, as “Director of Ecumenical Affairs and Religious Dialogue”. In this new post, Rev. Fr. Kwasek will build bridges and work to dispel misunderstanding between our church and other denominations. By establishing this office, the Archbishop-Metropolitan has provided a single point of contact through which such efforts are coordinated.
Rev. Fr. Kwasek, ever the servant of the Church, has accepted this position in addition to his current posting as pastor of St. Francis & St. Tarcicius Parish in San Diego, CA. Congratulations to Rev. Fr. Kwasek in his new posting!

The Church Website Migration completed
The Church was a new website, which is www.catholic-canc.us . This domain name was chosen to provide better church identity, and to eliminate any confusion caused by changes regarding intercommunion. All old domain names have been terminated. The new domain name is joined by a migration to a new web hosting provider, which has additional features that we will use to better benefit the church, and the many people who visit.

Our Emissary is received in Rome at the Vatican
Reverend Fr. Jerome D. Kwasek, Vicar General of the Province of the West and Pastor of St. Francis & St. Tarcicius Parish in San Diego, California, was received in a scheduled meeting with representatives of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity on August 23, 2008 in Rome. Fr. Kwasek presented letters of introduction from the Archbishop-Metropolitan Robert M. Gubala, SCR and from his Ordinary, Bishop Andre Queen, SCR. This meeting had been in the planning stages for some time and came to be, after numerous emails and letters back and forth. Several topics of discussion had been selected, including a historical timeline, a discussion of our similarities and ways to establish regular channels of communication to avoid misunderstandings and to promote Christian unity. Fr. Kwasek provided an overview of the past and current activities in which both the Roman Catholic Church and the Catholic Apostolic National Church have assisted each other and worked side-by-side. As the information and ideas presented are reviewed and discussed, we hope that this small mustard seed will grow into something wonderful in time.
The CANC, CANCZ, and the OCCE as one church
Archbishop-Metropolitan Dennis Beevers and Archbishop-Metropolitan Robert Gubala have executed a new church document, effectively joining the Old Catholic Church of Europe to the Catholic Apostolic National Church, and vice versa. Although each local church shall continue to maintain their code of canon law proper to the church, we are one church. In addition, the Catholic Apostolic National Church of Zambia, under Archbishop Luciano Mbewe is also to be considered as part of the CANC. Each national church shall maintain their sovereignty and each Archbishop-Metropolitan maintains their ecclesiastical authority over the local church. Each local church shall continue to operate under the current names, while recognizing their familial ties to the others.
